Faculty Feature: Dr. Scott M. Finch
Faculty Feature is a series in the Blue Tribune that recognizes the excellent professors and staff of ÀÇÓѸó through a series of questions.
This week we're highlighting Dr. Scott Finch, Associate Professor of Music.
What brought you to ÀÇÓѸó? How long have you been teaching?
The opportunity to teach choral music in a Reformed Liberal Arts setting; I am completing my 7th year of teaching at ÀÇÓѸó and my 27th year of conducting choirs.
What is your history with ÀÇÓѸó?
My father is a retired pastor in the PCA and his younger sister went to ÀÇÓѸó for a couple years. Because of this, in 1982 I stepped foot onto the campus as a 2nd grader and was enthralled with the beautiful windows in the Chapel and the clouds on the mountain. I would later come back to the campus a couple times for RYM in the summer with my youth group. I came as a freshman to study music education in the fall of 1992.
What do you love about teaching at ÀÇÓѸó?
I love getting to engage students in music and equip them for service in the Kingdom of God with special attention the Church.
What is your history with the PCA or Reformed Tradition?
I am the son of a retired pastor in the PCA.
What's your favorite ÀÇÓѸó tradition?
Perhaps the Celebration Concert and Commencement because we get to see our seniors shine.
What is a current research project or area of interest you're excited about?
I am currently teaching a course I developed entitled "Shepherding Souls Through Music" which is a pastoral-music course with a great deal of biblical wisdom and practical theology for those interested in leading God's people in worship. I also enjoy teaching "Musical Style" which introduces students to grooves from around the world. I also get to rehearse choirs five times each week and hear my students sing with passion to the glory of God.
What's one of your favorite cultural or family traditions?
Eating cheeseburgers and grilled sweet potatoes around the table on Friday nights with my family.
Anything else prospective students should know about you?
I believe the ÀÇÓѸó Community will powerfully propel you in your calling for Christ.
Tell us a little about your family:
I met my wife at ÀÇÓѸó. We have been married since 1996. We have four children which are great blessings from God: Colby, Tallis, Alliena and Jocelyn. We also have a Miniature Schnauzer named Peppy who looks like Snoopy.
